Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1979

The Biosphere Reserve Mittelelbe with its unique and abundant animal and plant life is part of the marketing network Luther | Bauhaus | Garden Kingdom. It is with good reason that this incredible floodplain landscape along the Elbe River bears this title. Forming the biggest part of the Biosphere Reserve Riverlandscape Elbe which extends over five German Länder, the area is dedicated to the protection of endangered animals and plants such as the famous Elbe beaver. Other rare species which have their habitat here include the Siberian iris and the kingfisher. The first areas of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Riverlandscape Elbe were put under protection as early as 1979.
The Information Centre Auenhaus provides information about the reserve for children and adults alike.
